The invention aims to optimise the handling characteristics of a rotating surgical instrument, used to create a cavity in bone material. This is achieved by an ultrasonic transducer which is located in said instrument and which can transmit and receive ultrasonic waves. The ultrasonic transducer can be connected to an ultrasonic generator and to a receiving device which generates signals, according to the intensity of the ultrasonic radiation received by the ultrasonic transducer and according to the time period between emission of the ultrasonic radiation and the reception of reflected ultrasonic radiation. Said signals provide measurements for determining the characteristics of the bone material in the direction of the radiation emission. |
