Shafts supporting a stretcher for seriously ill patients which can be parted to lay the patient on a bed are joined by a spring-loaded latch having a fork-shaped part (6) in which a tongue-shaped part (7) can be inserted, the two parts being attached by a spring-loaded pin (5). The fork-shaped part has sliding surfaces (61) which rub on the sliding surfaces (71) of the tongue-shaped part. At least part of the first sliding surfaces have a different hardness from that of the second sliding surfaces, to reduce sliding friction. Pref. at least part of the sliding surfaces of one of the parts is of plastic and the other sliding surface is of a metal. Pref. plastic is nylon 6,6 or resin-Teflon and the metal is pref. Al or Cr-plated steel.
