A belt shortening device (10) for winding and unwinding a vehicle seat belt (12) is disclosed. The device (10) includes a spindle (22) mounted in a frame (20) and connected to a crank arm (28) to facilitate winding. The spindle (22) includes a longitudinally extending slot (24) which communicates with a laterally extending entry opening (26). A seat belt (12), when folded, is insertable into the longitudinally extending slot (24) via the laterally extending entry opening (26). Once the vehicle seat belt (12) is positioned within the longitudinally extending slot (24), the crank arm (28) is manipulated to, thereby, rotate the spindle (22) to wind the belt (12) therearound. The laterally extending entry opening (26) is positioned substantially mid-way along the length of the longitudinally extending slot (24) to prevent ejection and slippage of the belt (12) during winding. Additional tabs (112) may optionally be provided to hold the belt in place during winding. |
