PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the mode by which a color outside an input device gamut is mapped into a color within an output device gamut by applying compensation conversion to an input signal so that an output signal showing the color space coordinates of a second color which exists in an output gamut but does not exist in an input gamut is generated. SOLUTION: Compensation conversion is applied to an input signal so that an output signal showing the color space coordinates of a second color which exists in an output gamut but does not exist in an input gamut is generated. In a method that can be used for deriving compensation conversion, a step 201 identifies one or more areas for compensating a color space by detecting a first color set which exists in the gamut of an output device but does to exist in that of an input device. A step 202 identifies a second color set which exists in the input gamut and also exists in the output gamut. A step 203 generates conversion for mapping a second color set in the first color set.
