PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming device which is capable of obtaining high-quality images free of transfer defects and image defects by deposits by well cleaning the toners adhered to an recording material carrying member and other foreign matter and is capable of prolonging the life of the recording material carrying member and a cleaning member. SOLUTION: This image forming device has a transfer belt (recording material carrying member) 130 which carries a recording material on its surface and transports the material, image forming sections (image forming means) Pa to Pd which form the images on the recording material on the transfer belt 130, density sensors (detecting means) 26a to 26d which detect the amount of fogging toners and a cleaning web (cleaning member) 19 of a web form which wipes away the stains on the surface of the transfer belt 130 by coming into contact with the surface of the transfer belt 130. The cleaning capability of the cleaning web 19 is varied in accordance with the results of the detection of the density sensors 26a to 26d and recording material sizes.
