An improved ePTFE vascular graft suitable for interposition or bypass applications exhibits an improved in vivo healing response characterized by transmural capillary ingrowth which supports complete endothelialization and smooth muscle cell growth along the entire luminal surface of the graft. The inventive improved ePTFE vascular grafts have average internodal distances in the range of about 50 νm to about 70 νm with a microstructure characterized by elongated columnar nodes which form substantially continuous fibrillated internodal spaces between the luminal and abluminal surface of the graft. The greater internodal distances than conventional ePTFE vascular grafts when combined with the columnar node structure afford an improved healing response in vivo, while maintaining at acceptable levels other physical properties of the graft, e.g., wall thickness, luminal diameter, longitudinal tensile strength, radial tensile strength, suture retention strength, etc., as conventional monolithic ePTFE grafts without a reinforcing layer which would compromise the healing response.
|
