An apparatus for tearing up material, especially waste paper into pieces, has: (a) a sorting sieve (1) which has an extensive flat area; (b) a rotating rotor (2) with arms which lie in a plane parallel to the sieve area; and (c) abrading parts on rotor and sieve which pass one another at a close distance to cause the material to be torn up. The sieve comprises several sieve components (5) joined together. Preferably the sorting sieve is circularly shaped and its components are circular segments which are attached to a support like a spoked wheel having a hub part, a circumferential part and radial struts connecting the two.
