Accessing and updating a configuration database from distributed physical locations within a process control system

The system includes a first (master) database arranged in one location for storing a first data record (master copy), and a second (briefcase) database, arranged in a second location for storing a second data record. A slow communication connection is provided between the two locations. A communications routine uses the slow communication connection to copy a section of the first data record from the first database and stores the copied section as the second data record in the second database. Independent claims are included for a configuration database system and a method of using configuration data in a process control system.
