The invention relates to a process for preparing purified clavulanic acid or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or ester thereof, comprising the following steps: adding an additional solvent to a solution of clavulanic acid in a water immiscible solvent; contacting the solution with an amine; isolating the amine salt of the prepared clavulanic acid; converting the amine salt into clavulanic acid or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or ester thereof.
