PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To miniaturize a packed bed type cooler with increased thermal efficiency by carrying out the heat exchange operation in two stages, as the fluid layer is surely formed on the upper area of the packed bed and the segregation and the channeling are improved. SOLUTION: This cooling unit of a granule packed type is provided with a reduced cross section area 32 having the inlet 18 for the granules on the upper part of the main body in order to form a fluid layer on the upper side of the packed bed, with horizontal air-diffusing tubes 16, 16a for jetting air uniformly to the cross section of the main body near the uppermost part of the lower cone 12 at the lower part of the main body, with an inner cone 34 for blowing air into the lower part of the packed bed inside the main body so that the air feed from the air-diffusing tubes may be adjustable independently from the air rate from the inner cone. In this case, the upper part of the main body 10a of a circular or truncated cone shape is connected to the upper edge of the lower cone 12 so as to generate a packed bed having the fluidized bed on the upper side 44.
