PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the fuel cost of an internal combustion engine and to provide energy conservation by suppressing wear loss, to improve the durability of tappets, cams and the inside surfaces of holes sliding with the tappets of a cylinder head by improving the wear resistance and seizure resistance in sliding parts and to make a weight lighter and driving power loss less by reducing the size of the tappets so as to avert the occurrence of peeling, cracking, etc., even under the severe sliding conditions in the engine. SOLUTION: The tappet for sliding with the cam for driving the opening and closing of an intake and discharge valve of the internal combustion engine is formed with a coating layer 18 of a diamond-like carbon(DLC) film having small wear resistance and excellent durability, adequate toughness and adhesion property on the sliding surface 12 with the cam of a tappet body 10 and the sliding surface 16 with the hole of the cylinder head.
