PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To conveniently and efficiently produce a polyalkylene oxide not containing metal impurities at all and having no remaining bad smell by the polymerization in the presence of a polymerization initiator having no problems in production and handling and not requiring special measures before starting polymerization when producing the polyalkylene oxide by polymerizing an alkylene oxide compound. SOLUTION: This method is to polymerize an alkylene oxide compound in the presence of tetrakis [tris(dimethylamino)phosphoranilideneamino] phosphonium fluoride or in the presence of the same phosphonium fluoride and an active hydrogen compound selected from water and an organic compound having a substructural formula -OH or -NH-).
