PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for the turnaround of a filter- tipped cigarette in a first row into a gap between the first row and a second row adjacent to it and for handing over the cigarette to the gap. SOLUTION: A filter-tipped cigarette 11 in a first row along a first conveyor belt, which is located in the same row as a filter-tipped cigarette 11 in a second row and is arranged in a state of mirror symmetry, is subjected to turnaround by the following processes and is handed over: the cigarette 11 is handed over to a holeless second transfer channel; a group composed of at least two adjacent cigarettes 11 is subjected to simultaneous turnaround by an angle of 180 deg. in a perpendicular direction to their longitudinal axis; making the cigarettes be shifted by their length in their axial directions; making the cigarettes be shifted by a half-pitch length (T/2) in their transfer directions: and handing over cigarettes 11 arranged on the periphery from a holeless transfer channel into a gap between second rows in a transfer region to the holeless transfer channel. A turnaround drum 2 has at least one turnaround element 4a, 4b which is/are constituted to perform the turnaround of at least two rod-like articles 11 to be subjected to turnaround so as to be in a mutually parallel state.
