PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stop a grinding wheel at a prescribed cutting staring position automatically to an object-to-be-ground before grinding operation. SOLUTION: An air pressure sensor 26 detects air pressure on the surface layer of the outer periphery of a rotating grinding wheel 24, and the air pressure is converted into voltage and outputted to a CPU 41. A control panel 50 is provided with a handle operating a grinding wheel lifting device 30 and a previous-contact detecting switch for giving directions of stopping the grinding wheel 24 at a prescribed cutting starting position brought into close contact with a work 2 before grinding operation. A reference voltage value outputted from the air pressure sensor 26 when the rotating grinding wheel 24 reaches the cutting starting position is stored in a memory 42 in advance. The CPU 41, receiving directions from the previous-contact detecting switch, compares voltage outputted from the air pressure sensor 26 with the reference voltage value and, when they meet each other, the CPU 41 ignores an operating command from the handle and stops the operation of the grinding wheel lifting device 30.
