PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a highly pure phosphate useful as a flame retardant or the like without clogging a vapor pipe, a condenser and the like, by reacting a hydroxy compound with a phosphorous compound and then subjecting the obtained crude product to a steam distillation treatment, while adding an organic solvent. SOLUTION: This method for producing a phosphate, such as a compound of the formula [R1 to R8 are each a 1 to 4C alkyl; R9 to R12 are each H, a 1 to 4C alkyl; X is a bonding hand, CH2, S, O or the like; (n) is 0 or l; (m) is 0 to 5], having a melting point of >=70 deg.C comprises reacting a hydroxy compound such as a phenol compound having at least alkyl groups at 2,6-positions with a phosphorous compound such as phosphorus oxychloride and then subjecting the obtained crude reaction product to a steam distillation treatment, while continuously or intermittently adding an organic solvent such as n-hexane to the reaction product.
