PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a carbonaceous thermal insulant low in wear, deterioration and powdering at the time of using and excellent in thermal insulation characteristic and to provide its production method. SOLUTION: The insulant has the carbonaceous thermal insulating member having 0.1-0.4 g/cm3 bulk density, a carbonaceous protective layer obtained by penetrating pyrolysis carbon to a carbon fiber structure and having 0.3-2.0 g/cm3 bulk density and a pyrolysis carbon coating film layer having larger bulk density than the carbonaceous protective layer, and a joining body is formed by joining the carbonaceous protective layer on at least one part of the surface of the carbonaceous thermal insulating member, and the pyrolysis carbon coating film layer is formed on at least carbonaceous thermal insulating base material among the surface of the joining body. |
