PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal composition required to have a dipole moment in the lateral direction, i.e., direction perpendicular to the major axis of the compound, and also to obtain a novel compound which provides a dipole moment in the lateral direction, useful for liquid crystal devices. SOLUTION: This compound is shown by formula l [A is a ring with 4 H atoms removed and having a conjugate double bond; B and C are each a ring with 3 H atoms removed and having a conjugate double bond; F is an ortho- position; R1 is a (substituted) 1-12C alkyl or the like; R3 is a (substituted) 1-12C alkyl or the like; R2, R4 and R5 are each H or F; (s), (v) and (x) are each 0 or 1 ; (t) is 1 to 3; (u) is 1 or 2; and (y) and (z) are each 0 to 2], e.g. a compound shown by formula II. The compound shown by formula I is synthesized by a process which starts with the reactions of a compound shown by formula III with n-butyl lithium, 1,2-epoxy octane and boron trifluoride etherate. |
