PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound having a specific structural unit obtained by a liquid polymerization method, effective as a photoconductive material, and useful as an charge-transporting material in a function separate-type photosensitive layer, and a material for an organic EL. SOLUTION: This new compound is the one of formula I (Ar1 to Ar4 are each an arylene; R1 and R2 are each a single bond or a nonsubstituted aliphatic divalent group; R3 and R4 are each an acyl or an alkyl). The compound is obtained by reacting a compound of formula II with a compound of formula III, and hydrolyzing the resultant product. The aromatic polycarbonate resin is obtained by dissolving a diol compound of the formula HO-X-OH (X is a divalent aliphatic group), (e.g. ethylene glycol) in a solvent, adding a deoxidizing agent (e.g. dehydrated pyridine), and further adding a halogenated carbonyl compound (e.g. phosgene) thereto to carry out a polycondensation reaction of the diol compound with the compound of formula I.
