PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a compact tension device and a compact engine as a whole. SOLUTION: In this device, a moving body 15 is fitted in a guide hole 19 of a pulley supporting portion 16 disposed on the front face of an engine body 1 such that the moving body 15 can slide freely. A tension pulley 13 is connected to the moving body 15 via a supporting shaft body 14. A middle portion of an adjusting bolt 20 disposed along the guide hole 19 of the pulley supporting portion 16 is screwed into a screw portion 15b of the moving body 15. The adjusting bolt 20 is supported on the pulley supporting portion 16 such that it can rotate while its axial movement is restricted. Thus, the tension pulley 13 moves along the guide hole 19 by turning the adjusting bolt 20 and tension of a belt 9 hung across a drive wheel and an idler wheel is adjusted.
