PLANT FATTY ACID EPOXYGENASE GENES AND USES THEREFOR

An isolated nucleic acid molecule (NAM) (I) encodes, or is complementary to an isolated NAM which encodes a fatty acid epoxygenase (FAE) enzyme other that a mammalian arachidonic acid epoxygenase enzyme. Also claimed are: (1) an isolated NAM which comprises a nucleotide sequence (NS) which is >= 65% identical to sequences of 1358, 1312 and 550 base pairs (given in the specification) or their complements; (2) a genetic construct which comprises (I) or an isolated NAM as in (1) operably connected to a promoter sequence, where the NAM is capable of being transcribed in the sense or antisense orientation relative to the direction of in vivo transcription of a naturally-occurring epoxygenase gene; (3) a recombinant polypeptide which comprises a sequence of 374, 374 and 183 amino acids (given in the specification) or their >= 50% identical homologue, analogue or derivative; (4) a plant transformed with (I) or an isolated NAM as in (1) or a derived cell, tissue or organ or the progeny of the plant which also comprises the NAM; (5) a transformed plant which is capable of expressing a recombinant polypeptide as in (3) or a derived cell, tissue or organ, or progeny of the plant which is also capable of expressing the recombinant polypeptide, and (6) an antibody molecule which is capable of binding to a mixed-function epoxygenase polypeptide or an epitope.
