PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate uncomfortable vibration generated when an engine automatically stops when an automatic engine stopping device and direct-injection stratified charge engine are assembled together. SOLUTION: An engine 1 is a direct-injection stratified charge gasoline engine operable by switching either to homogeneous-charge combustion or stratified- charge combustion. Before the controller 9 automatically stops the engine 1 according to a vehicle stop, it prohibits the stratified-charge combustion and selects the homogeneous-charge combustion. Thus, the engine 1 automatically stops after an intake air amount decreases and therefore it can prevent vibration generation due to reaction force of compressed air inside a cylinder. |
