PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printing apparatus capable of applying printing even to a recording medium such as a deposit passbook different in thickness between the first and latter half pages of the bound part thereof while ensuring a proper printing gap and capable of obtaining a high-grade printing result. SOLUTION: An ink jet printing apparatus is equipped with a printing head 7 reciprocally moving while keeping a first predetermined distance with respect to a predetermined reference surface S, medium pressing rollers 15a, 15b reciprocally moving in connection with the printing head 7 in the vicinity of the printing head 7 while keeping a second predetermined distance shorter than the first predetermined distance with respect to the reference surface S, the platen 26, 27 opposed to the medium pressing rollers 15a, 15b through the reference surface S and positioned before and behind the feed direction of a deposit passbook and platen control means 30, 31 controlling the projected quantities to the medium pressing rollers 15a, 15b of the platens 26, 27.
