PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide fibers which are used for immobilizing microorganisms, have good compatibility with the microorganisms, permit the adhesion of the microorganisms in a short time, scarcely fall or peel the microorganisms after adhered, and can further activate the proliferation and metabolic actions of the microorganisms by adding an active ion-releasing substance to the fibers. SOLUTION: The modified polyvinyl alcohol-based fibers contain 5 to 40 wt.% of at least one selected from polyamine-based polymers and polycarboxylic acid-based polymers, preferably further contain 0.01 to 10 wt.% of particulate tourmaline, and have thermally been treated.
