PURPOSE: A kimchi refrigerator and a method are provided to minimize temperature difference from the target temperature and reduce noise caused by an operation of compressor. CONSTITUTION: In a kimchi refrigerator which maintains refrigerator compartment temperature by turning on/off a fixed speed compressor(10), the fixed speed compressor is constituted by a variable speed compressor(15) of which rotational speed varies in accordance with a preset value. In a method of controlling operation of kimchi refrigerator by adjusting on/off operation cycle of a compressor so as to maintain a refrigerator compartment temperature at the target temperature, the compressor is operated by measuring the compartment temperature after the compressor has operated for a predetermined time in accordance with a preset frequency, and changing the reference frequency according to a frequency determined for inverter controlling the compressor based on a difference between the measured present temperature and the target temperature.
