A medical device comprises a surface coated with a physiologically acceptable polymer that contains a nitrosyl containing organometallic compound dissolved or dispersed therein. The polymer coating is insoluble, inhibits diffusion or reductants into the coating, inhibits the release of nitrosyl containing organometallic compound and releases nitric oxide when the device is inserted into blood.
