PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to inexpensively and easily recognize an original size. SOLUTION: After the states of first and second original size detecting sensors are checked in the opening state of a pressure plate (S1), an exposure lamp is moved to a prescribed position and is lighted (S2 and S3) and the image data for one line of a main scanning direction is read in (S4). Next, the exposure lamp is lighted out (S5) and after the image data is subjected to simple binarization (S6), the pressure plate is closed (S7) and the states of the original size detecting sensors are checked (S8). The exposure lamp is again lighted (S9) and the image data for one line of the main scanning direction is read in again (S10). The image data is thereafter binarized (S11) in the same manner as for S6 and the binarized image data obtained in S6 and S11 are compared with each other and the original size is recognized (S12) in accordance with the data change before and after the opening and closing of the pressure plate, by which the processing is ended.
