Process for preparing eprosartan at a reduced pressure of 11 inches of Hg using a piperidine catalyst

A process for the manufacture of eprosartan that comprises reacting a compound of formula (II) with a compound of formula (III) (wherein R' is C1-4alkyl). The reaction is characterised in that it is carried out at a reduced pressure, about 9-13 inches of Hg, in the presence of a catalyst, preferably piperidinium propionate and excess propionic acid. The R' ester is then hydrolyzed and can form a pharmaceutically acceptable salt.
