PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a plasma display device presenting a clear display particularly suitable for a television by realizing a higher peak brightness compared with a conventional one, reducing power consumption, and improving smoothness of gradation display. SOLUTION: Multiple APLs(Average Picture Levels) are set according to an average screen brightness. A peak brightness is increased by decreasing maintenance pulse periods for APL level groups with smaller APLs to increase the number of the maintenance pulses in individual sub-fields. Light emitting efficiency is increased, and the maximum power consumption is reduced by increasing maintenance pulse periods for APL level groups with larger APLs requiring a larger discharge light emitting power. A brightness distribution on a screen is detected when the APL level is small, and the setting for the number of the maintenance pulses and the period of the maintenance pulses are changed on the same APL levels based on the detected information to increase the peak brightness, and to improve smoothness of gradation on a dark screen.
