PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fluorescence method and a fluorescent element thin in thickness, light in weight, low in power consumption long in service life, wide in visual field angle, and high in response speed, and to provide a display device using the element. SOLUTION: This fluorescent element is equipped with an excitation light source 2 so that a substrate 4 formed of a transparent material can be irradiated with excitation light 14. Two electrodes 6, 10 are formed on the substrate 4, and a power supply 12 is connected between the two electrodes 6, 10. A fluorescent thin film 8 is formed as interposed between the electrodes 6, 10. The electrode 6 consists of an excitation light transmitting material which transmits the excitation light 14 from the excitation light source 2, while the electrode 10 consists of a fluorescent light transmitting material which transmits the fluorescent light 16 from the fluorescent thin film 8.
