PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the adhesion force of a metallic layer to a transparent glass substrate by forming a diffusion layer of metal to the substrate at the boundary between the glass substrate and the metallic layer. SOLUTION: The diffusion layer of metal to the glass substrate is formed at the boundary of the transparent glass substrate and the metallic layer of the metal. A flat plate of, for example, BK7 (nd=1.516 and vd=64.0) is used and is polished to parallel surfaces. The reflection surface of the glass substrate is subjected to a surface treatment by immersing the substrate into a molten AyNO3 salt of 250 deg.C for a prescribed time, by which the ion exchange of Na+ in the glass with Ag+ ions in the molten salt is effected. Next, the glass substrate after the treatment is subjected to washing and drying, then to vacuum vapor deposition of Ag on its surface, by which a reflection film is formed. If the depth of the diffusion layer is, for example, >=10Å, the sufficient adhesion property may be obtained and if the depth is <=100Å, there is no drastic degradation in the reflectivity.
