The sensor has a housing (1) having, a first set of holes (7) for fixing screws (11) whose axes are perpendicular to a face (3) of the housing (1) for fixing to a flat surface, and a second set of holes (13) for fixing screws whose axes are perpendicular to those of the first set of holes (7), so that the housing can be fixed in an upright position on the surface. Auxiliary covers (2A,2B) are provided which are fitted to the housing (1) when it is to be fixed in the upright position, these auxiliary covers provide the housing with upright fixing feet (12,13,14).
