PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To interpolate picture data by an interpolating method corresponding to the contents of a picture. SOLUTION: Picture information including object information is inputted to an input terminal 10 of this picture processor. A decoder 12 develops picture data inputted from the terminal 10 in a bit map, stores it in a picture memory and supplies header information of a plural objects included in input picture information to a symbol data extracting circuit 16. The circuit 16 investigates whether character information or figure information exists in header information from the decoder 12 or not and outputs the investigation result to an interpolation algorithm deciding circuit 18. The circuit 18 decides an interpolation algorithm to be applied from the three prepared ones 20-24 in accordance with the output of the circuit 16. An interpolation data generating circuit 26 interpolates picture data of each frame stored in a picture memory 14 in accordance with the algorithm decided by the circuit 18 and supplies it to a display device 28.
