PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a pointing device which makes it easy to grasp the manipulated variable and the movement quantity of a pointer and is suitable to a small-sized and portable information equipment by outputting a movement control signal indicating that the movement quantity of the pointer is zero for a certain time after the pointer leaves a point on the outer edge part of a movable area when it reaches the point. SOLUTION: This pointing device 2 outputs to a CPU a movement control signal representing the direction and quantity of movement of the pointer 8 displayed on a liquid crystal display 6 corresponding to the slide direction and movement quantity of an operation part 3. The CPU controls the movement of the pointer 8 according to the movement control signal outputted by the pointing device 2. The pointing device 2 outputs the movement control signal indicating that the movement quantity of the pointer 8 is zero for a specific time after the operation part 3 leaves the movable area outer edge part after reaching it. Consequently, operation for placing a mouse at another position after putting it away from a mouse pad can be done without putting the fingers away from the operation part 3.
