PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable changing over an aspect ratio in the inside of a panel by writing a recharge signal in the order of a gray level and a black level with respect to signal lines of both sides in setting a side black mode and thereafter holding these black levels. SOLUTION: In the active matrix type TFT liquid crystal display device of a two-step batch precharge system, a precharge signal Psig is written in the order of the gray level and the black level with respect to signal lines sig1, sig4 of both sides among signal lines sig1 to sig4 in setting the side black mode and these black levels are made to be held. As a result, since the variability of the potential Vcs of a Cs line 12 is not generated at the write of the precharge signal, the black levels are surely written to the signal lines sig1, sig4 of the both sides. Thus, both sides of a display area can be made to be complete black displays.
