The process for the combined production of a soot free synthesis gas and power comprises the steps of primary and secondary steam reforming of a hydrocarbon feedstock. Part of the synthesis gas is withdrawn from the secondary steam reforming at high pressure and expanded in a gas turbine for the production of power. The remainder of the soot free synthesis gas is expanded and utilized as fuel in the primary steam reforming step.
