PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a small-sized magnetic storage device with large capacity having >=5 giga bit/cm2 recording density. SOLUTION: In a magnetic recording medium in which a magnetic layer 105 of Pt-including Co alloy is formed on a substrate via a base, the base is constituted of a plurality of base layers comprising a structure in which a first base layer 103 consisting essentially of Cr and including Ti and a second base layer 104 consisting essentially of Cr and including at least one kind of element selected from a group composed of Mo and W are laminated in this sequence. Thereby the magnetic recording medium, in which crystalline grain size of the magnetic layer is small to enable reducing medium noise, (c) axis is oriented in a plane to enable obtaining high coercive force and high S/N ratio is given in a high recording density region, is obtained, Then by combining the magnetic recording medium and a MR head, the small-sized magnetic storage device with large capacity can be realized.
