PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data management system in a portable terminal where the data transfer programs of the portable terminal are integrated into one even when data files to be managed by the portable terminal are added or changed, or even when any data file necessary for each portable terminal is changed or even when a host computer is changed. SOLUTION: In this system for managing data, a portable terminal is connected through a communication line with a host computer, and data are loaded from the host computer to the portable terminal, or data are unloaded from the portable terminal to the host computer. the portable terminal is provided with a file defining situation file 12 which stores at least a file mane and a communication division, and a file transfer is requested from the portable terminal 10 to the host computer 20 based on the file name and the communication division set by the file defining situation file 12.
