PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate the need for depending on the manual control by a user by automatically controlling the on/off switching of the DSP circuit of a reproduction system based on a result being identified by a means for identifying recording condition. SOLUTION: By referring to data being written on the optional region of system data recorded on a recording medium, the on/off switching of a DSP circuit is automatically controlled. More specifically, data determined by a format is written at the camera header of the optional region at the time of recording in a camera mode. On the other hand, all 1's are recorded at the camera header in a VTR mode. By referring to the camera header in a common optional region at the time of reproducing a tape, it can be judged whether the data has been recorded in the CAM mode or VTR mode at the time of recording. By utilizing the judgment result, when the mode at the time of recording on the tape is the CAM mode, the DSP circuit is turned on. In the case of the VTR mode when recording on the tape, the DSP circuit is turned off.
