Disclosed is the use of a pharmaceutically acceptable salt of equilenin-3-sulfate ester for inhibiting or treating free radical induced disease states. The pharmaceutically acceptable salt of the 3-sulfate ester is an alkali metal salt, alkaline earth metal salt, ammonium salt, alkylamine salt containing 1-6 carbon atoms, or dialkylamine salt containing 1-6 carbon atoms in each alkyl group.
