PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent an original from falling from an original platen even when the original projects from the original platen by providing an original supporting body supporting the original which projects from the original platen so that it may project to the side surface of a main body. SOLUTION: This image reader 30 is constituted so that an original platen cover 3 which can be opened/closed is attached to a housing 16 hermetically sealed in a state where nearly all the area of an upper surface is the transparent original platen 1. A supporting member 17 is attachably/detachably attached to the periphery of the original platen 1 being the upper surface of the housing 16. When the original has such size that it does not project from the housing 16, the member 17 is attached to the housing 16 in a state where it does not project from the side surface of the housing 16 by fitting two pins 17a protrusively provided on the member 17 in the hole 16a and the slot 16b of the housing 16. On the other hand, when the original has such size that it projects from the housing 16, the member 17 is attached to the housing 16 in a state where it projects nearly perpendicularly from the side surface of the housing 16 by fitting the pins 17a of the member 17 in the hole 16c and the slot 16d of the housing 16.
