The gear-shift mechanism in a housing (34) comprises a first relatively rotating element pivot mounted on an axle (48) , and a second relatively rotating element. A coupling (50) alternately joins and separates the two elements and has a first wedge-shaped cog with a first axial length and a second wedge-shaped cog with a second axial length longer than that of the first wedge-shaped cog, and possesses a truncated cone-shaped end. The two elements have third wedge-shaped cogs for engaging with the coupling's wedge-shaped cogs. The third wedge-shaped cog has a matching truncated cone-shaped end. A movable selector operates the coupling for joining and separating the third wedge-shaped cogs. The coupling and selector are joined by a sprung connection
