The invention relates to a sewing or embroidering machine, comprising a transducer (4) for detecting the yarn tension that is created in a yarn (2) while the stitch is being formed, an electronic evaluation and control device (9) and a yarn tensioning device (3). According to the invention, the evaluation and control device (9) is configured in such a way that the yarn tension values for several stitches are measured first, and a characteristic value is then determined using a statistical analysis method. This characteristic value is then compared with a predetermined desired value. If the difference between the desired value and the characteristic value exceeds a predetermined value, the evaluation and control device (9) produces a corresponding control signal for controlling the yarn tensioning device (3). This ensures that the yarn tension is controlled as accurately as possible.
