A procedure for controlling the operation of a lean-mix IC engine has the exhaust gas led through an exhaust cleaning system which has an NOX trap. The procedure comprises: - the determination of a first characteristic value for an incremental amount of NOX generated by the engine during a lean-mix operating state of the engine; - the determination of a second value which is characteristic for an incremental NOX amount that is stored in the trap; - the calculation of a third value based on the difference between the first and second values; and - the interruption of the lean-mix operating state of the engine when the third value exceeds a specified threshold value.
