A switch element comprises conductive source, drain and gate electrodes, one or more semiconductor island layer provided between the source and drain, an insulating layer between the source and island layer, an insulating layer between the drain and island layer, an insulating layer between the island layers if two or more island layers exist, and a gate capacitor formed of the gate electrode, the island layer and gate oxide between them. The electric field applied to the gate capacitor becomes substantially parallel with the channel current that flows between the source and the drain through the island.
