The invention relates to a network which is subdivided into several segments (1...7) connected to one another by coupling devices (11, 12, 13). When the data transfer rate of a node (8) changes, the coupling device (11) identifies the new data transfer rate, generates a special telegram in which the data transfer rate is contained as information, and transmits said special telegram to adjacent components. These components have a receiving device which is adjusted to the fixed predetermined data transfer rate of the special telegram, they analyze the information, and they adjust their bus connections to the new data transfer rate. This enables a rapid propagation of a new data transfer rate on the network.
