A ground water purification regulating and modifying process, comprising modifying ground water supply to a purification wall for extending or shortening the contact time and for varying the loading of different wall portions with time, is new. A process for regulating, controlling and modifying the loading of ground water purification walls, comprises using technical measures in a pollutant laden ground water conduit to modify the hydrostatic pressure distribution and ground water supply to the purification wall and thus divert pollutants spreading from contaminated regions such that, on one hand, the dwell time of the contaminated ground water in the reagent or adsorbent of the purification wall is extended or shortened in a controlled manner and, on the other hand, the loading of different wall portions can be varied with time. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) a drainage system insert for carrying out the above process, in which drains are incorporated in the supply stream to the purification wall so that the non-homogeneously laden ground water can be supplied through a regulated distributor to passage constructions which are freely selected according to the loading; and (b) a regulated design of a passage construction for carrying out the above process, in which the passage construction is equipped with devices for allowing the passage time of the contaminated ground water and thus the dwell or contact times to be extended or shortened.
