A method supporting Mobile Station (MS) handoff back operations across tandem switches makes use of a modification of the ANSI- (41) Standard. The method, which may be adapted to networks supporting path minimization operations, determines that a handoff back call connection operation to a Target Mobile Switching Center (Target MSC) (65) should occur, verifies that a designated channel (107) of the Target MSC (65), which may be an Anchor MSC (AMSC) (65) or Tandem MSC is available to support the MS (50), establishes a third inter-MSC trunk (185) between the Serving MSC (95) (SMCS) and the Target MSC (65), moves the MS (50) to the designated channel (107), and directs a Tandem MSC (75), and the SMSC (95) to realease unused inter-MSC truncks.
