The two halves of the mold (5,6) are placed in an insulated steam chamber (1,2) to carry out the molding and foaming stages. Fine water sprays are fitted to the back walls (3,4) of the chamber or to a support frame (1a,2a) to cool the mold (5,6) during the setting stage. An Independent claim is also included for the process of molding and foaming plastic articles in a mold by the application of steam and then cooling the mold to 40 to 80 deg C by means of water sprays. The water evaporates so that its latent heat is utilized. The condensate from the steam can be recycled. The pressure in the chamber (1,2) can be reduced by a vacuum pump and/or by moving the chamber walls outwards.
