Using a particular mode of oscillation, the free end of the lengthy connecting section is excited by (ultra-) sound. The transmitted wave is reflected back from defects, forming the measured signal A(t) which is detected at the free end. Characteristics of the defects are determined from this signal, following digitization and evaluation. An Independent claim is included for the corresponding equipment required.
