The device has at least one adjustable component (1,5) and a position control device (9) with an adjustable position operating device (8) for adjustment of the component. The alignment of the operating device relative to the adjustable component is detected for automatic switching of the function of the control device. One of the adjustable components may be provided by a patient table (5) with a table surface (6) which can be adjusted in the longitudinal direction, with the control device positioned at the side of the table surface.
